How Many Google Reviews Do You Need to Rank? (2026)

"How many reviews do I need?" is the most common question we get, and the answer nobody wants to hear is: enough to beat the businesses currently above you.

That said, there's a practical way to work out your target and a clear order of priorities once you have it.

    1

Work Out Your Real Target in Five Minutes

Search your main service plus your town. Note the review count and average rating of the three businesses in the map pack. Your target is roughly the median of those three, plus a margin. If they sit at 40, 65 and 90 reviews, 70+ is a realistic goal — not 500.

    2

    Recency Beats Total Count

A business with 45 reviews, six of them from the last month, generally outperforms one with 200 reviews where the newest is a year old. Google weights freshness because it reflects a currently active business.

Aim for a consistent trickle — three to five a month beats twenty in one week followed by silence.

What's Actually In the Review Matters

Reviews that mention the service and location ("replaced our boiler in Clevedon") give Google contextual relevance a star rating alone can't. You can't script them, but you can prompt them by asking customers what job you did for them.

    Perfect 5.0 Isn't the Goal

A 4.7 with 80 reviews converts better than a 5.0 with nine. Consumers are sceptical of flawless ratings. Respond to negative reviews calmly and factually — that reply is read by far more people than the complaint itself.

    The System That Actually Works

Ask on the day of completion, send a direct review link by text, and follow up once after 48 hours. That's it. Reviews alone won't carry a badly built profile though — pair them with the fundamentals in our map pack guide, or let us handle the profile for you.
